Types of Foam Cushions

If you’re looking for new cushions to replace your current ones, be sure to familiarize with the different types foam available on the market. Cushion fillings can be made from multiple materials. Depending on your needs, one type of foam cushion may be more suitable than another.

Compressed polyester

According to The Foam Factory, this cushion filling is durable with its hypoallergenic and mold-resistant properties. It is also machine washable and air-dries. However, it does flatten over time and will require replacement with heavy use.

Polyester Fiberfill

Much like any other cushion stuffing, this polyester material is hypoallergenic and mildew-resistant, making it a versatile material. However, machine washing can cause the fiber to bunch together.

High Density Polyurethane Foam

With its anti-microbial treatment and high density, this foam cushion is resistant to bacteria and maintains its shape well. For these reasons, this foam is perfect for indoor furnishings that experience heavy usage.

Open Cell Foam

This porous foam easily allows for the flow of water and air through its material. These properties allow the cushion to be microbial and mold resistant. It also dries very fast. It is perfect to use on low-maintenance outdoor patio furniture that experiences all types of weather.

Closed Cell Foam

Unlike open cell foam, this type of cushioning prevents moisture absorption, which makes it buoyant. Due to this characteristic, closed cell foam is perfect for floating cockpit cushions. It is also great for poolside or boat settings due to its water-resistance.
