How Unusual Window Shapes Can Add Appeal to Your Home

If you live in a home with an unusual or unconventionally-shaped window design, your first thought might be a disparaging one. However, it’s important to realize that you’re not “stuck” with a strangely-shaped window. You’re actually being given an opportunity to do something truly different and unique with your home. Don’t shy away from the possibilities that are offered to you by a strikingly-designed window: Use it as a jumping-off point. If you’re still stumped for Interior Window Treatments and are trying to figure out the appeal of the unusual windows in your home, here are a few things to consider.

It Brings More Light In

It Brings More Light In

Often when we’re faced with oddly-shaped windows that don’t seem to serve much of a purpose, we have to wonder what they actually bring to the table. With some windows, it seems hard to imagine why they were installed to begin with. But geometrically intense or unconventional windows actually exist to help get around the limitations of more standard-looking windows by bringing in light at strange angles. With a diagonal or half-moon window that’s placed high up in the home, you’re not getting the kind of straight-on, direct light you’re accustomed to, and that’s a purposeful decision by the architect. It can be hard to try to change the angle of natural lighting using conventional windows. By bringing in light at different angles, an entire space can be transformed throughout the day.

It Creates Different Angles

If you have a lot of rooms in your home that are tight and hard to light, irregular windows can provide a bit of relief from the cramped darkness. As we already know, windows serve to open up a space by letting the light in. With oddly-shaped or unconventional windows, we have a chance to shine the light onto irregular spaces, potentially ones that wouldn’t have been able to have a window if not for the use of a strangely-shaped alternative style. In smaller rooms like bathrooms, kitchens, or offices, it can be helpful to have a small, irregularly shaped window offering some indirect light and a lack of glare. It can also create interesting shadows within certain rooms, giving a previously standard room a more artistic effect. Uncommonly shaped windows give us a way to play with shade and light without having to restructure entire rooms of the home.

It Ties Your Space Together Visually

From the outside, your home’s window might look fairly uniform, except for those one or two unconventional choices. From the inside, however, it’s a different story. When a house has nothing but conventional windows, it can actually create a limiting, boxed-in effect. Irregular windows not only release light in a more nuanced way, they actually act as a relief to the straightforward and traditional look of all-rectangular window fronts. Since your home is built, most likely, as a variation on an inverted triangular or off-kilter rectangular shape, the structure is already unbalanced in a way that enhances its style. Having irregular windows installed to suit that style helps pull everything together in a coherent way.
